A Salute to Anita Roddick: Fashion with a Heart

Anita%2520Roddick%2520PIC.jpg As in any industry, fashion has its share of geniuses, icons, and rock stars. But, there is only one woman in fashion who has been: granted a title from the Queen, hailed by world leaders, admired by business students, and loved by many from the non-profit sector. Oh, and did I mention that she has her own cosmetic line as well? That woman is Dame Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop.

Whenever somebody belittled fashion, my friends and I always help up Anita's work as an example about how fashion can be a powerful force for change. Her life's work was very inspiring- the Body Shop advocated fair trade and environmental consciousness long before they became trendy.

This is why I was saddened to hear that she died of major brain haemorrhage yesterday. This might have been triggered by a cirrhosis of the liver which she had after contracting Hepatitis C from blood given during the birth of her youngest daughter.

Fashion has lost another star for good but her legacy lives on, hopefully, as long as the Body Shop remains committed to all that Anita stood for.
