A Stylish Birthday!

FC-79-Bikini.jpgBreak out the champagne and cupcakes! It’s stylish.ca’s birthday today! A new style blog is born!

Coincidentally, we share our birthday with a true style icon: the bikini! According to the BBC News article “The bikini: Not a brief affair”, that itsy bitsy swimsuit first made its debut on July 5th, 1946. (okay... so we don't exactly share a birth DAY... but close enough, right?)

The bikini as we know it turns 60 on 5 July. It has weathered scandal, shrugged off the fads and whims of fashion, been celebrated as helping with the emancipation of women and lambasted as turning women into objects of desire.

Here’s a little bikini trivia to help us celebrate:

The bikini was named after an island in the South Pacific where nuclear tests were conducted.

Louis Reard, the creator of the bikini, was in a contest with some designer to see who could produce the world's smallest swimsuit (Apparently, the real challenge back then was to find a girl indecent enough to wear it!).

Mr Reard was an engineer by profession.

The white bikini that Bond Girl Honeychile Rider (Ursula Andress) wore in the 1962 firm Dr No (you know, the white one with the knife tucked into the belt) sold at auction for $61,500.
