Celebrating Real Beauty

Almost all the women in my office are in purple today. It made me think for a moment. Did we have to come in uniform color schemes now? Did purple suddenly become the hot shade to wear this season? And then I remembered. It is International Women's Day today.

Although purple is my favorite color, i've never been one to wear shades of it in excess (i'm too pale for it, unfortunately). What i'm going to do is to give recognition to this marvelous global celebration in my own little way. Its tempting to do a blog feature on phenomenal woman icons who are using their beauty, talent, compassion and celebrity to uplift the lives of others. Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey, and Queen Rania of Jordan...the list goes on! What i'd really like to draw attention to, right now, aren't the women who are already equipped to achieve big things for themselves and their advocacies. Instead, I want to recognize a campaign aimed at "real women". Dove's campaign for real beauty challenges stereotypes of beauty and celebrates diversity. Not every woman can be Queen Rania (well, you can be inspired by her. I know I am) but that doesn't mean she isn't beautiful or has the potential to achieve great things in her own way.

Happy International Women's Day :-)
