Fashion Gives a Nod to Green

If the May 2007 issue of Vanity Fair is a sign of things to come then green is on its way in. And i'm not talking about the color here... we're talking about how its suddenly (and rightfuly) hip for everyone to start saving the planet. Perhaps the growing trend was sparked by Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". Now we have folks from all industries who ae making highly creative and personal statements about conservation. Leonardo DiCaprio, who is among those featured by the fashion rag, takes the baton from Al by creating his own documentary on the environment, "The 11th Hour".

Leo smoulders on glaciers on the cover on the American edition but he is upped by his co-star, a polar bear cub named Knut. Knut is so popular in Germany that he has the cover of German Vanity Fair all to himself. His picture was taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz for the magazine and for an environmental campaign. Little Knut, who was abandoned by his mother, has been taken in by the Berlin Zoo and has risen to international fame ever since.

Can the fashion industry, which has been long hounded by controversies such as the fur trade issue, really help bring attention to environmental problem? Hopefully Vanity Fair does not only influence this month's choice of clothing but a whole new mindset and approach to the environment as well.
