All I had was 2 days in Hong Kong. What that really means is that I had to be quick on my feet if I wanted to do everything I wanted to do. Much as I love to shop, I don't fancy the idea of spending entire days inside the malls of an place i've never been to before. Malls of major cities are all the same anyway. Its not the place to be to get acquainted with a city's character. Bustling Hong Kong itself set the tempo to the pacing I needed. Something is always about to happen in Hong Kong- there's always a hip band from the U.K holding a major concert, a fashion label launching its new line, or a new magazine being born. Its difficult not to get caught up in its energy. At the end of those 2 days, I was able to eat enough dumplings and sightsee to my heart's content. And, yes, I was able to get everything that I set out to buy. On day 1 alone, I had a cute new phone in my hands and the yummiest chocolates in Asia in my backpack. Cathay Pacific didn't have the gold bag any more but they did have it in green and white. I was also able to buy "How to Walk in High Heels" by Camilla Morton, which I almost bought online because it wasn't available anywhere near me.
Hong Kong was still at my heels even when I was about to leave- at an airport shop featuring the works of the most celebrated East Asian artists today, I saw a wallet that I just had to get. It was a robin blue wallet with a sprinkling of tiny crystals, illustrated by artist Jimmy Liao. There's a girl with a wispy frame, dragging a stuffed suitcase. I imagine that the suitcase might be full of great books, adorable bags, clothing, and much chocolate. She could as well have been me, returning from Hong Kong ;).
