Shopping for Little Miss Stylish

bolero2.JPG I ran into my aunt in the mall yesterday while she was shopping for some clothes for my ten year old cousin. “I remember how you used to hate receiving clothes at her age during Christmas,” she chuckled, showing off some of the dresses she had chosen. True. At age ten, I disliked shopping and wore whatever my mom bought for me. I was still much more interested in chocolate, nifty Nintendo video games, and books then. Shopping was not in my vocabulary. Mom, on the other hand, really enjoyed shopping for me. Now I understand why…there are so many nice, adorable choices out there for kids! Here are a few of what I spotted.

Tis the season to layer and this velvet bolero with the funky fur trim from Target will look lovely with just about anything. When it comes to layering, I think mommies should go for jackets and sweaters that open in front rather than those kids have to pull over their heads. You’ll avoid having to fix their hair every time they wiggle in and out of a pullover.

I remember my mom being worried sick when she’d put on real jewelry on me. In fact, I remember losing a gold bracelet with pearls during a game of tag. These Hello Kitty necklaces with pink and white rhinestone pendants from Sanrio are nice, glam accents that aren’t costly at all.

They’ll go well with these two dresses. The hot pink one shot with metallic yarn accents and smocking is from Gap kids. She’ll be the little star of the party because empire cut waistlines are making a comeback. The varsity-stripped Ralph Lauren kids dress is both smart and stylish. I love the little flounce in front…ideal for wearing with (I must say it again) dark stockings and tights. Since preteens are notorious for growth spurts, moms will be happy to know that the buttoned shoulder-straps are adjustable to fit.

Harry Potter” is no longer the only children’s book in my collection now. “Eloise in Paris” has found itself in my book shelf as well. It’s a story about a little girl who is set loose in the city which is most synonymous to fashion and art, Paris. The illustrations by Hilary Knight are just fabulous and Eloise’s observations are heartwarmingly fresh and cute.

Bright colors will always figure in a preteen’s wardrobe. Splashes of color is good but avoid anything that looks too clownish. A fun-loving gal will love the Jansport Superbreak backpack and the Ralph Lauren mini tote is something I’ll be tempted to borrow and use myself…

The same rules of style for adults apply for kids. However, please please buy things that are appropriate for their ages…no skanky lingerie tops for the 6 year old or frilly baby doll dresses for the preteen. Believe me, little Miss Stylish will thank you for it later on.
