Shopping in Shenzhen

40 minutes (by train) from the heart of Hong Kong is the Chinese city of Shenzhen, or what I have dubbed the "shopping factory of the world". Name any big fashion RTW brand- Nike, GAP, Juicy Couture, etc- and it was probably manufactured there. As a result, you have factory over-runs and amazingly good imitations flooding every shopping district in the city...at a fraction of their usual price. Its no wonder that more Hong Kong fashionistas were on the train I took bound to Shenzhen rather than the expected tourists.

I regret not being able to remember the particular shopping distrcit our tour guide pointed me to. I do have a business card from one of the shops (in Chinese characters!), which I presened to the cab driver when I came back unaccompanied. The level of spoken English in Shanghai and Beijing is better than in Shenzhen but...since when has a common language been a prerequisite to bagging good shopping deals ;) ? The bargains and choices were so much better in Shenzhen that I ended up buying an extra piece of luggage (also at a lowlowlow price) because things wouldn't fit in the bag I brought comming there. A quick inventory: green mesh floral cap, 2 rugged skirts, 2 Adidas jogging pants (factory over-runs), canary yellow shoes, animal print bag, JingJing bag tag (she'll be famous when the Beijing Olympics 2008 swings by!), silver sneakers, white boots (the boots are unbeleivably comfortable and chic for their price), opaque leggings, and a sweater.

Thats enough shopping for a year. Or until I revisit Shenzhen. Hehe.
